The IELTS writing test is the third part of the exam. It lasts 60 minutes and consists of 2 tasks. The test format is different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training
Task 1
Word Count: Minimum of 150-160.
Time Duration: 40 mins.
Task Description: Describing visual information, often presented as a bar chart, table or graph.
Task 2
Word Count: Minimum of 250-260.
Time Duration: 20 mins.
Task Description: Presenting arguments and opinions in a discursive essay relating to a topic of general interest.
Task 1

Task Description: Responding to a situation with a letter, e.g. asking for/giving information or explaining/complaining about a problem.
Task 2
Word Count: Minimum of 250.
Time Duration: 40 mins.

No, but 20 minutes is the recommended time that you should allow. If you use more time then you may not have enough time to complete Task 2 successfully.
Yes, you will be penalised because it is not possible to complete the task effectively in fewer words than the minimum requirement.
The writing tasks are assessed according to the following 4 criteria; task achievement/response; coherence and cohesion; lexical resource; grammatical range and accuracy. There are separate band score descriptors for Task 1 questions and Task 2 questions.
Yes. Accurate spelling is part of the grammatical range and accuracy criteria, so it's always advised to check your answer for spelling mistakes when you've finished writing.
No. Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the overall writing score.
